Yoga Retreat in GoaIN

India's smallest state by area, pressed between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. A former Portuguese colony with a distinctive culture of spiced seafood, baroque churches, and — from October to May — one of Asia's most established yoga retreat scenes on its palm-lined northern beaches.

Why here

North Goa''s retreat scene runs on the contrast between its beach culture and a serious yoga infrastructure that has built up over 30 years in the villages of Assagao, Mandrem, and Anjuna. International teachers set up seasonal programmes here from October to May, drawn by affordable costs, reliable weather, and a community of like-minded practitioners. The result is a higher density of skilled instruction than almost anywhere in Europe or the Americas, at a fraction of the price. Goa''s Portuguese heritage adds an architectural and culinary layer — whitewashed churches, spiced food, and feni distilleries — that makes it more than a retreat backdrop.

October to May is the season — sunny days, low humidity, and temperatures of 25–32°C. The monsoon (June to September) is dramatic and extended; most retreat centres close entirely or shift to skeleton programmes. The sea is rough during monsoon and swimming is inadvisable. December and January bring peak tourist numbers but the yoga community is typically focused enough to be undisturbed.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Goa''s Dabolim airport (GOI) receives direct flights from most Indian cities and seasonal charters from Europe and the UK. Panaji and Mapusa are the main transport hubs; North Goa villages are reached by taxi or scooter (10–40 minutes from the airport). Scooter rental is the standard way to navigate between beaches and retreat centres. Accommodation in the yoga villages ranges from budget guesthouses to boutique eco-resorts.

Ashiyana Yoga Retreat

Retreat center

A beachside retreat centre on the Mandrem River in North Goa, operating since the early 2000s and one of the most comprehensive yoga facilities in India. Ashiyana combines accommodation, a natural swimming pool, a hammam, five treatment rooms, and a full Yoga Alliance-registered 200-hour teacher training with a programme of weekly and bi-weekly retreats across styles including Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, breathwork, and somatic movement. The food — a fusion of Indian, Nepalese, and Thai cuisine — is a consistent highlight. The centre's coastal location gives it something the inland Assagao retreats lack: direct access to Mandrem Beach, one of the calmer stretches of North Goa's coastline.

Purple Valley Yoga

Retreat center

A yogi's haven in the green hills of Assagao since 2003, specialising in Ashtanga yoga retreats in the tradition of K. Pattabhi Jois. Purple Valley runs one- and two-week courses led by senior Ashtanga teachers who come on dedicated seasonal residencies — the roster of past visiting teachers includes some of the most respected names in the global Ashtanga community. The setting is a lush garden compound with a pool, massage services, and two buffet vegetarian meals included; the approach is immersive rather than educational, giving practitioners the space to deepen practice without the pressure of a teacher training schedule.

SWAN Yoga Retreat

Retreat center

A traditional yoga and Ayurveda retreat in the hills of Assagao offering week-long and two-week programmes in classical Hatha, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Yoga Nidra, and Tantra. SWAN has been running since the mid-2000s and its teaching lineage connects directly to classical Indian yoga — Swami Ambikananda's tradition — rather than the international studio styles that dominate North Goa's newer centres. Teacher training, pranayama workshops, and Panchakarma Ayurvedic programmes run through the season (October to May). Accommodation is simple and the daily structure disciplined; SWAN attracts practitioners who come to study rather than holiday.
