Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in ZagoriGR

Epirus stone-village country in the Vikos-Aoos geopark, where the Voidomatis, reputedly Europe's clearest river, runs turquoise under Ottoman bridges.

Why here

The Voidomatis is the river photographers accuse of being retouched: glacially cold, transparent turquoise water running below Vikos Gorge, one of the world's deepest relative to its width, through the UNESCO-listed geopark and under Ottoman stone bridges. Honesty first: this is Class II wild-place paddling, scenery and clarity rather than adrenaline, with the Aoos adding Class III-plus in spring melt for those who want work. The forty-six stone villages of Zagori, themselves UNESCO-listed since 2023, wrap the rivers in one of Europe's great slow landscapes, and Konitsa at the confluence is Greece's quiet paddling hub.

Best months

April through June has the best flows and the Aoos option; the Voidomatis runs clear through October. Trips take about three hours with briefing, cold-water gear provided. This is the anti-theme-park of European rivers: low water some late summers is the honest tradeoff.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly to Ioannina (IOA), about an hour to the Zagori villages of Aristi or Papigo, or base in Konitsa. Combine with the stone-village hiking that has no canonical activity but deserves the days anyway.
