Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Sun KosiNP
Nepal's Sun Kosi is one of the ten great river journeys of the world — a 9-day, 270 km expedition from the Tibetan border foothills to the Gangetic plains, passing through remote gorges, jungle camps, and Nepali villages far from roads.
Why here
National Geographic rated the Sun Kosi one of the ten great river journeys of the world, and it earns that ranking. Nine days on a single river, flowing 270 km from the Tibetan border foothills to the edge of the Indian plains — through remote gorges, jungle camps, Nepali villages, and Class IV–V rapids that build in intensity as the river gathers volume. There is no road following the lower canyon; the only way out is downstream.
Best months
Best season is October–November, immediately after the monsoon ends — the river is full and powerful, visibility is excellent, and Himalayan weather is stable. March–May offers a second window (spring) with lower water and a slightly more relaxed character. Monsoon season (June–September) makes the river dangerous and the jungle sections impassable. Water temperature 16–20°C; rapids range Class III–V with the largest in the lower canyon.
Getting there & around
Fly to Kathmandu. The put-in at Dolalghat is ~3 hrs from the city by road. The 9-day expedition requires a river permit, camping gear, and a full support team — all arranged by specialist operators. Trips typically end at Chatra in the Terai lowlands, with jeep transfer back to Kathmandu. Book well in advance for October; this is one of Nepal's most popular adventure experiences.
