Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Gauley RiverUS
The Upper Gauley is among the most technically demanding commercially rafted rivers in North America — 12 miles and 335 vertical feet through five consecutive Class V rapids during the annual Gauley Season dam releases each September and October.
Why here
The Upper Gauley during Gauley Season — seven weekends of Army Corps of Engineers dam releases each September and October — is the most intense commercially rafted water in North America. Five named Class V rapids in sequence, 335 feet of drop over 12 miles, in a remote West Virginia gorge with no road access. Gauley Season is a genuine American institution: outfitters are booked months in advance, and experienced rafters return year after year.
Best months
The Summersville Dam releases approximately 2,800 cubic feet per second during Gauley Season, creating consistent high-volume Class V conditions. Without the releases, the Gauley is unraftable commercially. Lower Gauley (below Peters Creek) runs Class III–IV and is suitable for intermediate groups. Water temperature is 12–16°C in autumn; wetsuits required. Season window is strictly the seven release weekends — plan accordingly.
Getting there & around
Fly to Charleston, WV or drive from Washington DC (~5 hrs) or Charlotte (~4 hrs). The gorge is inaccessible by road — trips launch from Summersville and end with a shuttle. All major outfitters are based in Fayetteville and Lansing. Book 2–3 months ahead for peak October weekends. The Lower New River provides a good warm-up run the day before for groups doing back-to-back days.
