A karst-ringed town on the Nam Song river between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, once a backpacker tubing stop and now a base for kayaking, caving, ballooning and climbing among limestone cliffs and blue lagoons.
Why here
Vang Vieng runs along the Nam Song, a green river that winds under a wall of limestone karst, and paddling it is the classic way to see the valley from the water. Half-day kayak trips push through gentle wave trains and past caves, riverside villages and grazing buffalo, usually combined with a float or tube through the flooded Tham Nam water cave and a scramble at a swimming lagoon. In the June-to-October wet season the river runs high and fast enough for real rapids, while the cool dry months give clearer, calmer water and long views of the cliffs. The town went through a rowdy tubing era and has since settled into a proper outdoor hub, so the operators worth using are the ones running small groups with trained river guides rather than the old free-for-all.
Best months
Kayaking runs year-round, but the character changes with the season. From June to October the Nam Song is high and quick with the most exciting water; from November to March it is lower, clearer and calmer, better for first-timers and for combining paddling with caves and lagoons. Wear shoes you can swim in, and go with an operator that briefs and equips you properly, since water levels shift fast after rain.
Getting there & around
Vang Vieng is about four hours north of Vientiane and four to five hours south of Luang Prabang, now linked to both by the fast China-Laos railway as well as the road. The town is small and walkable and every operator sits within it; trips include the short shuttle to the put-in upriver. Bring quick-dry clothes and a dry bag for valuables.
