Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Tara River CanyonME
Europe's deepest river canyon, carved through 1,300 metres of limestone by the Tara River in Montenegro's Durmitor National Park. Multi-day rafting trips through pristine UNESCO-protected wilderness, with Grade III–IV rapids accessible to motivated beginners.
Why here
The deepest gorge in Europe is also one of its most beautiful and most accessible rafting destinations. The Tara River cuts 1,300 metres into limestone over 82 km, with the most popular rafting section running 18 km through 21 rapids (Grade III–IV) between Brstanovica and Scepan Polje. Montenegro's low prices, short transfers from Dubrovnik and Kotor, and UNESCO World Heritage status make the Tara Canyon a natural day-trip or overnight addition to a Balkans itinerary — and one of the few places in Europe where the whitewater, canyon scenery, and cultural context come together at budget pricing.
Best months
Best flows are April–June when snowmelt from Durmitor fills the river — this is when the rapids are most dynamic and the canyon walls are at their most dramatic. July–September sees lower water and warmer temperatures (18–22°C), making the experience gentler and more suitable for families and beginners. Spring rafting requires wetsuit and helmet; summer trips are more casual. The river is clean and the canyon unspoiled.
Getting there & around
The canyon is most commonly accessed from Zabljak (the nearest town, ~45 mins) or as a day trip from Kotor or Dubrovnik (~2.5–3 hrs). All major operators offer transfers and packages. The put-in at Brstanovica and take-out at Scepan Polje are well-organised. One-day, two-day, and three-day trips all available — overnight options include riverside camps with local food and bonfires. Montenegro is significantly cheaper than Western Europe.
