Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in FutaleufuCL
Class V Patagonian river rated by paddlers and expeditions alike as the finest whitewater on earth. Glacier-fed, turquoise-clear water, and a remote canyon setting in Aysén Region. The Futaleufu demands expert skills and rewards with an experience unlike any other.
Why here
Widely regarded as the finest Class V river on earth. The Futaleufu's combination of sustained technical difficulty, extraordinary volume, turquoise-clear glacial water, and remote Patagonian canyon sets it apart from every other whitewater destination. A week here — camping in the canyon, running multiple laps on Throne Room and Mundaca — is the benchmark that expert paddlers measure all other trips against.
Best months
Glacier-fed from the Patagonian ice fields, giving the river an extraordinary blue-green colour and unusually consistent flow. Best months are November through March when Andes snowmelt peaks. Water temperature is cold — 10–14°C — so drysuits are standard. The canyon walls provide shelter from Patagonian wind, but valley storms can arrive quickly.
Getting there & around
Fly to Puerto Montt or Coyhaique, then bus or shuttle (~4–6 hrs) to the town of Futaleufu. Remote but well-serviced by the major operators who have permanent camps. Passport required — river crosses the Argentine border at points. Season is strictly November–March; most operators run week-long lodge or camp packages.
