Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Bio-Bio RiverCL

The upper Bio-Bio and its Queuco tributary flow through ancestral Mapuche territory in the Andes foothills of central Chile, offering Class III–IV whitewater in a culturally rich, largely undisturbed setting. Once one of the world's great expedition rivers before downstream dams altered the lower canyon.

Why here

The Bio-Bio was once in the same conversation as the Futaleufu — a true Class V expedition river through remote Andean canyon. The Pangue and Ralco dams in the late 1990s and 2000s submerged the most extreme lower sections, but the upper Bio-Bio and Queuco tributary still offer genuine Class III–IV wilderness paddling through Mapuche ancestral territory, with a cultural and historical weight no other river in Chile carries.

The surviving upper section runs through the Andean foothills in its most natural state — cold, clear, and gradient-fed. Best flows November–March. The Queuco tributary (joining from the south) is the quality addition since dam construction — excellent technical water in a narrow valley. Water temperature 8–12°C; wetsuits essential.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly to Concepcion, then drive or bus into the Andean foothills (~3–4 hrs). The area around Santa Barbara and the Biobio canyon is sparsely serviced — most trips are run as part of broader Chile itineraries with specialist operators. Four-wheel-drive recommended for river access roads. Infrastructure is basic by Futaleufu standards.
