Surfing in ZarautzES
The learning capital of Spanish surfing on the Basque coast: a 2.5-kilometer beach break with World Surf League heritage, 25 minutes from San Sebastian and 90 from Mundaka.
Why here
Zarautz is where Spain learns to surf: a 2.5-kilometer beach break that has hosted World Surf League qualifying events, with Pukas Surf Eskola teaching on it since 1982, one of the oldest surf schools in Europe and an offshoot of the Pukas board-building dynasty. The Bay of Biscay delivers consistent swell along the whole Basque corridor, and when the autumn rivermouth banks switch on, Mundaka, Europe's most famous left, sits 90 minutes west for the advanced end of the trip. San Sebastian's pintxos bars are 25 minutes east, which settles the evenings.
Best months
September through November brings the prime swell; June through August is gentler and ideal for learning. Mundaka is an advanced wave only, and fickle: treat it as a bonus, not the plan. Wetsuits year-round.
Getting there & around
Fly to San Sebastian (EAS), 25 minutes, or Bilbao (BIO), about an hour; the Euskotren rail line runs direct to Zarautz. Book summer camps four to eight weeks ahead.
