Surfing in Arugam BayLK
A crescent bay with a classic right-hand point break at its southern end. Long, forgiving, and consistent with a cheap and friendly village.
Why here
The Main Point is a textbook right-hand point break. It's long, mellow, and consistent, with a sandy bottom that forgives mistakes. Incredibly affordable and genuinely friendly. Outer points at Pottuvil and Elephant Rock handle bigger swells for advanced surfers.
Best months
SW monsoon drives consistent 1–3m swell to the east coast April–October. Water 27–29°C, boardshorts. Mornings best before onshore develops. Flat season November–March.
Getting there & around
Fly to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Colombo — direct from Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and India; indirect from Europe, Australia, and the US via Middle Eastern hubs. Onward to Arugam Bay: three options. (1) Domestic flight from Colombo to Batticaloa (BTC), SriLankan Airlines, 50 minutes — then 2-hour road transfer south to Arugam Bay; fastest and most reliable. (2) Long-distance bus from Colombo to Pottuvil (adjacent to Arugam Bay): 8-10 hours, inexpensive but slow. (3) Private transfer by car from Colombo: 6-7 hours, $70-100 USD — practical for groups or after a long international flight. Arugam Bay village is small and walkable; surf schools and board rental on the main point beach. Budget throughout: guesthouses and basic surf camps dominate. Strict season: surf season is April to October (SW monsoon off-season). Outside this window the main point is flat, roads to the east coast can flood, and most accommodation closes. Combine with a safari to Kumana National Park (1.5 hours south — leopard, elephants, endemic birds) and Yala National Park (2-3 hours southwest — highest leopard density in the world).
