Surfing in TofinoCA

Canada's surf capital on Vancouver Island's wild west coast, where sand-bottom beach breaks meet temperate rainforest.

Why here

Tofino is Canada's surf capital and the country's only true year-round surf town, set where Pacific swell meets the temperate rainforest of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The waves are forgiving sand-bottom beach breaks at Cox Bay, Chesterman, and Long Beach; the commitment is thermal, with 7-15C water and 4/3 to 5/4 hooded wetsuits in every season. The town hosts Canada's national surf championships and built North America's female-led surf school movement: Surf Sister, founded in 1999, is the best-known women-founded surf school in the world and teaches everyone. September and October bring clean groundswell with the year's warmest water.

Surfable all twelve months. September-October is the sweet spot: organized groundswell, mild air, and the season's warmest water. Winter (November to February) delivers the biggest swell for experienced surfers; summer is smallest and most beginner-friendly. Full winter rubber is non-negotiable.
