Surfing in Teahupoo
A village at the end of the road on Tahiti Iti, the wild southeastern peninsula of Tahiti, and the name of the heavy reef-pass left that breaks offshore. One of the most powerful waves in surfing, it hosts the Tahiti Pro and staged the surfing events of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Why here
Teahupoo is the heaviest wave most surfers will ever see, a thick, below-sea-level left that folds over a shallow coral reef at the end of the road on Tahiti Iti. It hosts the Tahiti Pro on the world championship tour and was the surfing venue for the 2024 Paris Olympics, judged from a tower on the reef. The wave itself is for experts only, but Teahupoo is a genuine spectator destination: on a good swell you sit in a boat metres from the barrel and watch the best surfers in the world take off under a wall of water, and lighter days let intermediate surfers ride the gentler breaks and the lagoon nearby. Add the black-sand coast, the sheer green cliffs of the Fenua Aihere where the road ends, and whale season boat trips, and the reason to come is the raw power of the place, whether you paddle out or simply witness it.
Best months
Teahupoo breaks best on south and southwest swells from the Southern Ocean, which run strongest during the May to October dry season, the same window as the Tahiti Pro. It is a serious, life-threatening wave over sharp shallow reef and is not a spot to learn on, so most visitors watch from a boat or surf the softer breaks and the lagoon. The trade-wind mornings are cleanest. Boat access is essential to reach the lineup safely, and local knowledge of the reef and channel matters.
Getting there & around
Teahupoo is about two hours by road from Papeete, out along Tahiti Nui and across the isthmus to the end of the road on Tahiti Iti. The wave and the wild coast beyond the road are reached only by boat, so visitors book a local taxi-boat operator who shuttles surfers, photographers and spectators to the reef pass and along the Fenua Aihere. There are pensions and small guesthouses in the village rather than resorts, and boat trips should be arranged in advance, especially when a big swell or the Tahiti Pro brings crowds.

GuideTeahupoo Adventures Tours and Surf is a small family operator at the Teahupoo marina, founded by the son of Timothee, a local pioneer of surfing and boat driving on the mythic Teahupoo break. It runs taxi-boat shuttles to the reef pass, wave-watching trips a few metres from the barrel, full-day tours of the Tahiti Iti coast and surf coaching for those ready for the lagoon and lighter breaks. GuideTeahupoo Excursion Taxi Boat is run by Michael, a pilot and surfer with thirty years reading the Teahupoo reef pass, the heavy left that hosted the 2024 Olympic surfing. From the Teahupoo marina his boat Miliani One shuttles surfers, photographers and film crews out to the wave and along the wild Tahiti Iti coast, and runs whale trips in season. A second local pilot, Aitu, brings twenty years on the water, and both know the channel and its moods.
