A surf and golf town on the Clare coast at the edge of Liscannor Bay, on the Wild Atlantic Way a short drive from the Cliffs of Moher. Its long, gently shelving beach break is one of the most reliable learning waves in Ireland, while reefs nearby and the big-wave slab of Aileen's under the cliffs pull in the experts.
Why here
Lahinch is the surfing heart of County Clare. The town beach is a wide, sandy, gently sloping bay that produces clean, orderly waves ideal for a first lesson, which is why several long-running surf schools cluster along the promenade. Step up in ability and the same coast delivers punchy reef breaks around Liscannor Bay, and a short boat ride away sits Aileen's, the heavy big-wave slab that breaks under the Cliffs of Moher and is surfed only by a small group of experienced chargers. Lahinch works in every season, with the warmest, smallest waves in summer and the biggest Atlantic swells from autumn into winter. It pairs naturally with the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the trad music of nearby Doolin, so a surf trip here folds into the wider draw of the Clare coast without feeling like a detour.
Best months
Surfable year-round. Summer offers smaller, warmer, beginner-friendly waves on the town beach; autumn and winter bring the largest, cleanest Atlantic swells for improvers and the reefs. Water is cold in every season, so a full wetsuit and often boots are needed. The big-wave reef Aileen's under the Cliffs of Moher is strictly for experienced surfers on the right swell.
Getting there & around
Lahinch is on the N67 coast road in County Clare, about an hour from Shannon Airport and forty minutes from Ennis. Surf schools line the promenade with lessons, rentals and wetsuit hire, and the town has plenty of accommodation, cafes and pubs. Book lessons ahead in summer. It sits within a short drive of the Cliffs of Moher and Doolin, making a natural base for the north Clare coast.

Ben's Surf Clinic
SchoolBen's Surf Clinic has taught on the Lahinch shoreline since 2007, run by its founder Ben, who has coached surfing since 1993. Based right on the promenade in Lahinch, County Clare, it takes surfers from complete beginner to advanced across two-hour lessons that combine beach instruction with guided time in the waves, and runs its own surf shop. The clinic provides all wetsuits and boards and is one of the few Lahinch schools with free showers and private changing rooms on site.
Lahinch Surf School
SchoolLahinch Surf School was founded by John McCarthy, a three-time Irish national surfing champion, and runs from a beach hut on the Lahinch promenade in County Clare. It teaches two-hour lessons every day of the year, covering safety and time in the water, and runs weekend courses for adults and holiday camps for children and teens. Lahinch's gently shelving beach break makes it one of the most reliable places in Ireland to stand up on a board for the first time.
