Best months
Consistent NW and SW Atlantic swell September–March. Water 14–18°C, wetsuit required. Reef breaks demand wave reading — beginners should stick to beach breaks further up the coast. Summer flattens significantly.
Getting there & around
Fly to Lisbon (LIS) — well-connected from all European capitals. Car hire recommended: 45-minute drive northwest on the A21/A8 (the closest Portuguese surf destination to Lisbon airport). Bus from Lisbon's Campo Grande terminal to Ericeira: Mafrense company, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes — workable without a car if staying in town. Ericeira is a compact whitewashed fishing town; the World Surfing Reserve covers 4km of coastline with 7 distinct breaks (Ribeira d'Ilhas, São Sebastião, Pedra Branca, Coxos — the latter two advanced only). Ribeira d'Ilhas is 5 minutes by car from town; Coxos and Pedra Branca require a short drive. Smaller school infrastructure than Peniche but less crowded — better for intermediate and advanced surfers seeking quality lineups over instruction. Mid accommodation; strong short-term villa rental market for stays of a week or more. Combine with Sintra Palace complex (30 minutes) and Lisbon day trip.
