Surfing in El Zonte
A quieter surf village on the La Libertad coast west of El Tunco, known worldwide as Bitcoin Beach after residents began using cryptocurrency for everyday payments. A right-hand point breaks over rock and cobble in front of the town, with a rivermouth and beach sections nearby, drawing surfers who want the same warm-water waves as El Tunco with fewer crowds.
Why here
El Zonte offers the same warm-water, right-hand point surf as the rest of the La Libertad coast in a smaller, mellower package. The main wave is a rock-and-cobble right that peels off the point in front of the village, working best on the mid and higher tides, with a rivermouth and beach sections that give beginners a softer place to start. The town gained global attention as Bitcoin Beach, the community where cryptocurrency became everyday money years before El Salvador adopted it as legal tender in 2021, and that story brought a wave of remote workers and a low-key cafe scene without turning it into a resort strip. For surfers it remains one of the more relaxed bases on the coast, close enough to reach El Sunzal and Punta Roca on a bigger day but calm enough to log easy hours on the home point. Consistency is the draw here as everywhere on this coast, with clean conditions through the southern-hemisphere swell season.
Best months
Water is warm year round. The point favours mid to high tide and works best on the southern-hemisphere swells from roughly March to October, the same window that lights up the rest of the coast. The takeoff is over rock and cobble rather than sand, so booties and a guided first session help; the beach and rivermouth are the gentler options for learners. It is generally less crowded than El Tunco a few kilometres east.
Getting there & around
El Zonte is about an hour from San Salvador's airport along the Litoral coastal highway, a little further west than El Tunco, with the last approach a short descent to the beach. The village is small and walkable, and surf hotels sit right on the point. Most accommodations arrange lessons, board rental and day trips to nearby breaks or the volcanoes inland, and the town's Bitcoin-friendly cafes mean cards and crypto are widely accepted alongside cash.

Its surf program is led by a local instructor, Alex, one of the area's most experienced coaches, teaching on the right-hand point in front of the property and running guided sessions for every level. The team also arranges volcano, coffee and waterfall day trips, with an oceanfront restaurant and pool.

SchoolPuro Surf is a performance surf academy and boutique hotel in front of El Zonte Point in La Libertad, founded by Marcelo Castellanos, an International Surfing Association certified coach who has worked at the Pan American Games and on the World Surf League Championship Tour. Its coaches teach through the Surf Sequence, a level-based method Castellanos built to move surfers from a first stand-up to advanced turns, backed by a video-analysis room, a training pool and a gym.
