Surfing in El Tunco
El Salvador's best-known surf town on the La Libertad coast, nicknamed part of Surf City. A short beach break in front of the village suits beginners, while the long right-hand point at neighbouring El Sunzal and the fast, world-class right at Punta Roca draw intermediate and advanced surfers to warm water year round.
Why here
El Tunco is the hub of El Salvador's Pacific surf coast, a rocky rivermouth village where warm water and clean right-hand point breaks sit within walking or short-drive distance of each other. The beach break at El Tunco itself is where most people take their first lessons, a forgiving sandy peak steps from the hostels and cafes. Just up the coast, El Sunzal is a long, mechanical right that peels for hundreds of metres and is one of the most rideable intermediate waves in the region, while Punta Roca at La Libertad port is a world-class right that holds size and barrels over rock. El Salvador leaned into this coast so hard it branded the stretch Surf City and hosted the ISA World Surfing Games here in 2021 and 2023. Water is boardshort-warm all year, the swell is most consistent through the southern-hemisphere winter, and a mixed-ability group can all find their level within a few kilometres.
Best months
The water is warm enough for boardshorts every month of the year. The biggest, most consistent swells arrive on southern-hemisphere pulses from roughly March to October, when El Sunzal and Punta Roca are at their best; the drier months either side are cleaner and gentler for learning. All three main breaks work over rock or cobble rather than pure sand, so reef booties help and a guide who knows the tide is worth it. El Tunco's beach break is the softest option for beginners.
Getting there & around
El Tunco sits about 45 minutes to an hour by road from San Salvador's international airport along the coastal Litoral highway, an easy transfer that has made it Central America's most accessible world-class surf. The village is walkable, with lessons starting at the beach break out front; El Sunzal and Punta Roca are a few minutes away by car or tuk-tuk. Most surf schools include board rental and shuttle to whichever break is working best that morning.

Sunzal Surf Company
SchoolSunzal Surf Company operates on the El Sunzal and Playa La Paz stretch of La Libertad, the long right-hand point that anchors this part of the coast. Its instructors are local competitive surfers who start beginners on soft-top boards in the whitewater before moving them onto longboards and shortboards. Lessons run individually or in small groups from around 45 to 65 dollars including board and instruction, paired with beachfront lodging steps from the point.
Wassi Surf School
SchoolWassi Surf School sits in the heart of El Tunco town in La Libertad, run by Wassi, who started surfing at twelve and taught in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Ecuador before opening the shop in his home country. He is a surf instructor certified by the International Surfing Association, a nationally certified lifeguard, and has judged for the Salvadoran Surf Federation. Lessons begin at El Tunco's beach break and progress out to the El Sunzal point and Punta Roca, with board rental on site.
