Surfing in Bundoran
A small seaside resort town on the Donegal coast at the north end of Donegal Bay, widely called Ireland's surf capital. Cold, clean Atlantic swells wrap into a run of beach and reef breaks, from the beginner sand of Tullan Strand to the shallow reef known as the Peak in front of the town, and the surf scene anchors the town year-round.
Why here
Bundoran is where Irish surfing grew up. The town sits on Donegal Bay where the open North Atlantic funnels swell onto a rare mix of breaks within a few minutes of each other, so beginners and experts share the same day. Tullan Strand is a forgiving beach break that catches waves even on the calmest summer days, Rossnowlagh a wide gentle bay a short drive north, and the Peak a heavy shallow reef that breaks right in front of the town and draws experienced surfers when the swell lifts. The water is cold and the season runs all year, with the biggest, cleanest Atlantic swells arriving from autumn into winter. Established surf schools work here through every season, so you can learn on soft sand in July or watch reef surf in a January storm. It is a genuine surf town rather than a resort with a surf add-on, and the culture, from the board shops to the after-surf pubs, runs deep.
Best months
Surfable year-round. Summer brings smaller, warmer, beginner-friendly waves at Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh; autumn and winter bring the largest and cleanest Atlantic swells for improvers and the Peak reef. Water is cold in all seasons, so a good wetsuit, boots and often hood and gloves are needed. Schools pick the beach to match the day's swell and wind.
Getting there & around
Bundoran is on the N15 in south Donegal, about a three-hour drive from Dublin and under an hour from Sligo or Donegal town. Surf schools sit on or beside the beaches with lessons, rentals and hire of wetsuits, and several run surf lodges for multi-day stays. Book lessons ahead in summer; winter surf is for experienced surfers with the right cold-water kit.

Bundoran Surf Co
SchoolBundoran Surf Co has run its surf school in Bundoran since 2005, making it one of the oldest in Ireland, and is registered with the Irish Surfing Association, the national governing body. It teaches year-round for adults and children from age eight, working from two beaches, Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh, and choosing between them each day so beginners get manageable waves while stronger surfers find size. Alongside the school it runs a board and wetsuit shop and a surf lodge in the town.
Murf's Surf School
SchoolMurf's Surf School was established in 2016 by Owen Murphy, a multiple Irish surfing champion, and works from Tullan Strand, the most consistent beach break near Bundoran. Its coaches are Level Two Irish Surfing Association instructors and certified beach lifeguards, teaching beginners through advanced surfers in both group and private sessions. The school also runs children's summer camps and rents boards, wetsuits and bikes from its beachfront base in County Donegal.
