Scuba Diving in WatamuKE
One of Africa's oldest marine parks, gazetted 1968: coral gardens and resident turtles ten minutes from shore, with whale sharks in season.
Why here
Watamu Marine National Park, gazetted in 1968, is one of Africa's oldest marine protected areas and part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its reward structure suits divers of every level: around fifteen named reef sites sit ten to twenty-five minutes from shore, coral gardens hold resident green turtles, and the November-to-February window brings whale sharks and mantas up the coast. Aqua Ventures has taught PADI courses from Ocean Sports Resort since 1989, which makes it one of East Africa's longest-standing dive schools, and the protected status shows underwater in fish density the open coast cannot match.
Best months
October to March is the season: the calm kaskazi monsoon, 20-30m visibility, and megafauna from November to February. The June to September kusi monsoon brings rough seas and several operators wind down; this is honestly a seasonal destination, not year-round.
Getting there & around
Fly to Malindi (20 minutes away) or Mombasa (two hours by road). Dive centers operate from the beach resorts; marine park fees are paid per day.
