Best months
Visibility 10-25m — lower during plankton blooms that feed the whale sharks (murky water is a good sign here). Water temp 22-28°C, warmest Nov-Mar. Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus): highest documented density in the Indian Ocean, year-round with peak Oct-Mar. Resident mantas: year-round at cleaning stations along the reef. Humpback whales: Jun-Oct on migration, occasional dive-alongside encounters. Reef sites at 10-25m.
Getting there & around
Fly to Johannesburg or Maputo, then connect to Inhambane on LAM Mozambique Airlines — short turboprop flight. Transfer to Tofo village is 10-15 minutes by taxi. Small town with a handful of dive operators, guesthouses, and restaurants. Visa required for most nationalities — check current requirements. Combine with a Mozambique beach extension (Vilanculos, Bazaruto Archipelago).
