Scuba Diving in Tabarka
Tabarka, a small port below wooded hills in Tunisia's forested northwest, is the country's Coral Coast, named for the red coral of its Mediterranean seabed and known for rock reefs, swim-through tunnels and resident dusky groupers a few minutes off the marina.
Why here
Tabarka is Tunisia's dive capital, a small Mediterranean port on the Coral Coast where forested hills meet a rocky, coral-rich seabed. The reefs sit minutes from the marina and are built around dramatic granite architecture rather than tropical reef, with the signature site, the Tunnels, a labyrinth of some twenty swim-throughs, caves and arches at moderate depth. The headline residents are big dusky groupers of forty kilograms and more that approach divers without fear, alongside moray eels, barracuda, red coral and gorgonians, and there are Second World War wrecks for qualified divers. The clubs cluster at the marina and run on the CMAS and French-federation model, handling everyone from first-time try dives to certification, with equivalencies for PADI and other cards taken as routine. It is easy shore-and-boat diving in warm summer water with good visibility.
Best months
The dive season runs roughly from May to October, when the sea is calm and the water warms from the high teens into the mid-twenties Celsius by late summer; winter diving is cold and weather-dependent. The Tunnels and deeper grouper ledges suit divers comfortable at twenty to thirty metres, while shallow reef and the house sites work for beginners and try dives. Most clubs teach and certify on the CMAS system, so bring your certification card and logbook for equivalency.
Getting there & around
Tabarka sits in the far northwest near the Algerian coast, about three hours by road from Tunis, with a small airport that opens seasonally. The dive clubs are all at the marina, a short walk from the town's hotels, and boats reach the main sites in minutes. Diving is seasonal, so confirm the club is open outside high summer, and book courses ahead in July and August.

Club Nautique de Tabarka
ClubClub Nautique de Tabarka is the oldest diving club in Tunisia, founded in 1972 and based at the marina in Tabarka on the Coral Coast. It runs introductory baptism dives, CMAS training from one to three stars and guided exploration dives on the reefs off Cap Tabarka, including the Tunnels, a labyrinth of swim-throughs, and the ledges where large dusky groupers approach divers. Its certified instructors and own boats reach the sites minutes from the harbour through the spring-to-autumn season.
Emnautic Tabarka
OutfitterEmnautic is a dive centre at Tabarka marina on Tunisia's Coral Coast, running its own boats, Emna 1, 2 and 3, out to the reefs off Cap Tabarka. It offers baptism dives, four-dive discovery programmes and full CMAS certification from one to three stars, plus exploration dives from shallow reef down to around forty metres. Signature sites include the Grotte aux Pigeons, the tunnels and the Rocher aux Merous, where dusky groupers gather among the red coral and gorgonians.
