Scuba Diving in Moucha Island
A low coral island with its neighbour Maskali just off Djibouti City, inside a protected marine park at the mouth of the Gulf of Tadjoura. Shallow, sheltered reefs in warm, clear water make it Djibouti's easy, year-round diving and snorkelling base and the training ground for the capital's dive centres.
Why here
The Musha and Maskali islands sit just off Djibouti City inside a protected marine park, and they are the easy, year-round face of Red Sea diving in the Gulf of Tadjoura. Shallow coral gardens ring the islands in warm, clear water, with reef fish, rays, turtles and the occasional reef shark, and the short boat ride means you can dive in the morning and be back in town for lunch. This is where Djibouti's dive centres run their certification courses and check-out dives, so it suits first-timers and anyone after easy reef time. For stronger currents and bigger fish, the same operators push further out to the tide-swept narrows of Le Goubet and, in season, the remote Seven Brothers archipelago near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.
Best months
Diving is possible all year, with water in the high twenties Celsius and visibility best in the calmer, cooler months from October to April. The island reefs are shallow and sheltered, good for training and relaxed reef dives, while Le Goubet and the outer islands carry stronger currents for experienced divers. The same November to February plankton season that brings the whale sharks can drop visibility on the outer sites but rarely troubles the sheltered island reefs.
Getting there & around
Moucha is a short boat transfer from Djibouti City's harbour, close enough for a half or full day trip, and the dive centres in town supply tanks, weights and rental gear. Bring a certification card and logbook for guided dives, or sign up for an introductory dive or a full course. Diving here pairs naturally with a whale shark snorkel trip out in the gulf during the winter season.

Aqua Club Diving Center
ClubAqua Club Diving Center is a 100 percent Djiboutian dive centre founded in 2015 and based in Djibouti City, with instructors certified through PADI, CMAS, FFESSM and FDSS. Moucha Island is its home reef for training dives and daily boat trips, and it also runs multi-day excursions out to the wider Gulf of Tadjoura and the Seven Brothers archipelago. It offers baptism dives for beginners through to full certification courses, with its own boats and equipment.

OutfitterDolphin Excursions has run diving in Djibouti since 1999 and is the country's only PADI Gold Palm accredited centre, working from an office in Djibouti City. On the Musha and Maskali reefs it runs guided dives and PADI courses from Discover Scuba through to certification, and it also dives the current-swept narrows of Le Goubet and the wider Gulf of Tadjoura. Tanks, weights and rental gear are supplied, and trips are led by its own local instructors rather than resold through a platform.
