Scuba Diving in Kuwait City
Kuwait's capital at the head of the Arabian Gulf, a modern city on the site of an old dhow-trading and pearling port. The waterfront runs from the landmark Kuwait Towers past the Grand Mosque and the souqs to the Scientific Center's aquarium, with the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre and the National Museum holding the country's collections.

Diving in Kuwait is a quiet local secret, worked from the marinas of Kuwait City out to a scatter of low coral islands in the northern Gulf. Boats run to Kubbar, Qaruh and Umm al-Maradim, small sand-and-coral islets ringed by reef, and to a series of wrecks and artificial reefs on the sandy seabed closer to shore. It is warm, shallow, low-current diving with more life than the flat coastline suggests: rays and guitarfish over the sand, groupers and snapper on the reef, lionfish, moray eels, nudibranchs and, in the warm months, the chance of sea snakes and turtles. This is not a crowded dive destination, which is the appeal, and the same centres teach the full course ladder, so it works equally as a place to learn in easy conditions and as a relaxed logging trip for certified divers between the islands.
Best months
The Gulf here is diveable most of the year, but spring and autumn are the sweet spots: high summer is brutally hot topside and the water pushes past 30 Celsius, while midwinter can be cool and windy with reduced visibility. March to May and October to November give the best mix of warm water, calmer seas and clearer conditions. Visibility is moderate and improves offshore around the islands. Water temperatures range from the high teens Celsius in winter to the low 30s in summer.

US State Dept Level 3 Reconsider Travel (as of 2026-07), heightened regional tensions after the February 2026 US-Iran hostilities, with periodic Gulf airspace closures and flight disruptions; check your government's current advisory before booking. The dive centres are in and around Kuwait City and run boats from the city marinas out to the islands, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays with two dives per trip. Bring your certification card and logbook; centres rent full kit and teach the PADI ladder. Island trips are longer boat runs, so book ahead and expect weather cancellations in winter shamal winds.

SchoolNautilus Diving Kuwait is a PADI Instructor Development Centre based in Kuwait City, with a team of around fifteen instructors and staff. It runs guided boat dives to Kuwait's Gulf islands and wreck sites, rents and services equipment, and teaches the full range of PADI courses from beginner to professional level. The centre emphasises small guided groups and structured training for divers moving up the certification ladder in local waters.
Rio Dive Center
SchoolRio Dive Center is a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center in Kuwait City, founded in 2016 by a group of instructors and offering professional diving education. It runs boat and shore dives to Kuwait's islands, reefs and wrecks and teaches the full PADI ladder from Discover Scuba and Open Water through to instructor level, along with technical and specialty courses. Equipment sales, servicing and rental are handled in house, and it dives year round with small groups.
