Visibility 10-25m; best Jun-Oct. Water temp 22-28°C — warmest Jan-Mar. Stinger (jellyfish) season Oct-May: full-body stinger suit strongly advised. Outer Reef: wall and plateau dives at 8-30m, dense reef fish, reliable turtle encounters. Ribbon Reefs (north, liveaboard access): excellent coral, minke whale encounters Jun-Jul. Coral Sea (liveaboard): pristine walls, large pelagics, sharks.
Getting there & around
Fly to Cairns — well-connected from Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland. Day boats depart from Cairns Marina daily at 7:30-8am; return by 5:30pm, walking distance from CBD. Liveaboards add 2-3 nights at Outer Reef or Coral Sea — best value for serious divers. Multiple operators: Quicksilver, Silverswift, Mike Ball Dive for liveaboards. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park levy included in all trip prices.
