Scuba Diving in Dibba
The UAE's east coast on the Gulf of Oman, where the Hajar mountains drop into warm water. Dibba Rock, Snoopy Island and the Inchcape wrecks give the country its best reef and wreck diving.
Why here
The east coast is where the UAE finally has an ocean rather than the shallow, warm Gulf. From Dibba down to Al Aqah and Khorfakkan the Hajar mountains meet the Gulf of Oman, and a string of dive sites sits within a short boat ride of shore. Dibba Rock is the signature site, a horseshoe reef that gathers turtles, reef sharks, honeycomb morays and vast schools of jacks. Snoopy Island and the sunken Inchcape wrecks add easy shore and boat dives. Divers Down, based at Al Aqah since 2001, is the region's most established centre and a PADI five-star operation; Freestyle Divers at Dibba runs PADI, RAID and technical courses and reaches the same reefs. Both are a straightforward day trip from Dubai.
Best months
Diving runs all year, but visibility and marine life are best from autumn through spring, roughly September to May, before summer plankton blooms cloud the water. Water is warm year-round, from the mid-twenties in winter to the low thirties in summer. Sites suit everyone from first-time divers to those chasing wrecks and night dives. The east coast can pick up swell in winter, so trips are occasionally weather-dependent.
Getting there & around
Dibba and the Fujairah coast are about a two-hour drive from Dubai across the Hajar mountains, or closer from Sharjah. Most divers come for a day or an overnight; the resorts at Al Aqah put you next to the boats. Bring certification cards; centres rent full kit.
