Scuba Diving in Daymaniyat Islands
A chain of nine uninhabited islands and their surrounding reefs off the Al Batinah coast north-west of Muscat, gazetted as Oman's first marine nature reserve. Reached by boat from Al Mouj and Seeb, the Daymaniyats are the capital's diving playground, with coral gardens, turtles, rays and seasonal whale sharks.
Why here
The Daymaniyat Islands are the best diving within easy reach of Muscat, a protected marine reserve of nine low islands ringed by healthy hard and soft coral. Forty minutes offshore by boat, the sites range from gentle coral slopes ideal for a first open-water dive to livelier drop-offs and swim-throughs, and the reserve status keeps the fish life dense: green and hawksbill turtles, honeycomb morays, stingrays and eagle rays, reef sharks, and huge schools of snapper and fusilier. From roughly July to September plankton draws whale sharks, the highlight of the Omani diving year, and the shallows make the same islands a first-class snorkelling trip for non-divers. Because it is a nature reserve the islands themselves are closed to landing during the seabird and turtle nesting season, so the experience is all in the water. Warm, clear and close to the city, it is the reason Muscat has a cluster of long-running dive centres.
Best months
Diving is best from October to May, with visibility often up to 30 metres and calmer seas; summer warms the water into the low 30s C and brings the whale-shark window from about July to September. The islands are a protected reserve, so a permit is required (usually arranged by the dive centre) and landing on the islands is restricted during the nesting season, roughly May to October. Most sites are beginner and intermediate friendly, with a few deeper walls for the more experienced. Boats leave early to beat the afternoon wind.
Getting there & around
Dive boats leave from Al Mouj Marina and Seeb, both about 20 to 30 minutes from central Muscat and 10 minutes from the airport, then run 40 minutes out to the reserve. Trips are usually half or full day with two dives, and the dive centre handles the marine-reserve permit. Bring a certification card; the Muscat centres also run the full range of PADI and SSI courses, so beginners can learn here. Book the whale-shark season ahead, as it is popular.
