Scuba Diving in Dahlak Archipelago
A group of more than two hundred islands in the Red Sea off Massawa, only a handful of them inhabited. Long known for pearl diving, the Dahlak Archipelago now draws the rare visitor for warm, clear water, healthy hard-coral reefs and big marine life, all reached by boat from the Eritrean mainland under government permit.
Why here
The Dahlak reefs are among the least-dived in the entire Red Sea, and that is the whole point. More than two hundred islands sit off Massawa in warm, clear water, and because Eritrea has been closed to mass tourism for decades the hard-coral gardens, reef sharks, turtles, rays and schooling fish have had little pressure. There are no dive resorts and no crowds. You dive from a boat arranged out of Massawa, often sleeping aboard or camping on an island, with a small operation that carries its own compressor and gear. Visibility is good and the sites range from shallow coral for easy dives to walls and the occasional wreck. This is expedition diving rather than a resort week, which means self-sufficiency and permits, and in return you get Red Sea reefs the way they looked a generation ago, with almost nobody else in the water.
Best months
The diving season runs roughly October to April, when the water is calmest and clearest; May to September is very hot with rougher seas. Trips are boat-based out of Massawa and are usually multi-day, since the better reefs lie well offshore, so bring or confirm all your gear in advance because rental and air fills are limited. Water is warm year-round and sites suit a range of levels, though the remoteness means you should be a comfortable, current-certified diver. Facilities on the islands are minimal.

US State Dept Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution for Eritrea, with a specific risk of wrongful detention and very limited consular assistance (as of 2026-07). Reaching the Dahlak Archipelago requires a government permit beyond the Asmara area, arranged through a licensed Eritrean operator along with your visa; independent boat access to the islands is not allowed. Trips start from Massawa on the coast, a permit-controlled drive down from Asmara. Carry US dollars in cash, confirm dive gear and air fills before travel as there is no dive-shop network, and do not photograph the port, ships or any military or government installation.
