Scuba Diving in Bocas del Toro
A Caribbean archipelago in northwest Panama near the Costa Rican border, centred on Isla Colon and the laid-back stilt-house town of Bocas Town. Warm, sheltered lagoons, mangrove channels and coral reefs make it Panama's easygoing dive-and-surf base, reached by short flight or boat from the mainland.
Why here
Bocas del Toro is the warm, forgiving Caribbean counterweight to Coiba's big-animal Pacific diving. The archipelago's sheltered lagoons and shallow coral gardens sit in bath-warm water with little current, which makes it one of the easiest places in Panama to learn to dive or to log relaxed fun dives between islands. Reef sites like Hospital Point, the Sasha Caves and the coral bommies off Cayo Zapatilla in the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park hold hard and soft coral, sponges, nurse sharks, rays and turtles. The signature Bocas experience is the bioluminescent night dive, where the disturbed water lights up with blue-green plankton, something the sheltered bays here do exceptionally well. Above water it is a stilt-house town of over-water hostels and reggae bars, so the diving fits into a broader island week that mixes surf, mangroves and boat trips. It is beginner and family water rather than an adrenaline destination, and that is exactly the point.
Best months
Bocas dives year round, with water a warm 27 to 29 degrees and generally light current in the protected inner sites. The calmest, clearest conditions are usually September and October, with a second window in February and March. Heavy rain can drop visibility near river mouths and mangroves, so operators pick sites to match the day. Most reefs are shallow, from 5 to 18 metres, which suits training and long bottom times. The bioluminescence night dive depends on dark, moonless nights for the strongest effect.
Getting there & around
Bocas Town on Isla Colon is reached by a short flight from Panama City to Bocas airport, or by bus to Almirante on the mainland and a 30 minute water taxi across. Dive shops are in town within walking distance of the docks and run daily boats to the reef and marine park sites, most 15 to 40 minutes away. No car is needed; water taxis connect the islands. Bring certification for fun dives, or start a course on arrival. The marine park around Bastimentos and Cayos Zapatillas charges an entry fee.
