Scuba Diving in Amwaj Islands
A cluster of reclaimed islands off the north-east tip of Muharraq, ringed by marinas and the jumping-off point for Bahrain's dive boats, including trips to Dive Bahrain, the underwater park built around a sunken Boeing 747 in the warm shallows of the Gulf.
Why here
Dive Bahrain is the draw here, an underwater theme park off the north coast built around a decommissioned Boeing 747, at the time the largest aircraft ever deliberately sunk for divers. The jet sits upright in around 20 metres of warm, sheltered water, wings and fuselage intact, alongside a submerged replica of a traditional pearl merchant's house and sculpted reef structures designed to grow coral. Because it is shallow and calm, the site suits newly certified divers and works as a striking wreck for more experienced ones, and the surrounding Gulf reefs hold rays, barracuda, angelfish and the occasional turtle. The boats run from the Amwaj marinas on Bahrain's north-east tip, a short hop out to the site, so a morning trip fits easily around a city stay. It is one of the few places in the world where you can swim the length of a jumbo jet's cabin.
Best months
The Gulf here is diveable year round but most comfortable from October to May; high summer brings very warm water and fierce topside heat. The Dive Bahrain site sits at around 20 metres in generally calm, low-current water with moderate visibility that improves in the cooler months. Water temperatures range from the low 20s Celsius in winter to well into the 30s in summer, so a thin wetsuit or even a rash vest is enough in the warm season.

US State Dept Level 3 Reconsider Travel (as of 2026-07), heightened regional tensions after the February 2026 US-Iran hostilities, with periodic Gulf airspace closures and flight disruptions; check your government's current advisory before booking. Dive Bahrain is an official ticketed site and you must dive it through one of its registered centres, which handle the entry pass and the boat. The dive shops cluster around the Amwaj Islands marinas on the north-east tip of Muharraq, a short drive from Bahrain International Airport. Bring your certification card and logbook; centres rent full kit and run the standard course ladder. Trips are usually morning departures with two dives.

SchoolScubaMaster was established in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2007 and became the country's first PADI 5 Star IDC dive centre in 2008, and is one of the registered operators for the Dive Bahrain Boeing 747 site. From its base on the north coast it runs boat trips to reefs and wrecks such as Jarada Island, the Fifi wreck and Crescent Reef, teaches the full PADI course ladder from Open Water to instructor, and services and sells equipment. It reports having certified more than three thousand divers.
