Rock Climbing in Todra GorgeMA

A narrow canyon cut through the High Atlas foothills by the Todra River, where 300-metre limestone walls rise almost vertically from the riverbed. A small collection of lodges and camps at the canyon mouth serves as base for climbers and trekkers exploring the broader Atlas range.

Why here

A 300-metre canyon of ochre and rust limestone rising from the Saharan foothills, Todra is Morocco's premier rock climbing destination. The main gorge walls offer multi-pitch routes from grade 4 to 8a, most accessible without a guide — but the southern Atlas and surrounding anti-Atlas hide remote sectors requiring local knowledge. The contrast between desert camp life and technical vertical climbing is the draw.

Best months

October through April is the climbing window — the gorge sits at 1,500m and summer temperatures make afternoon climbing unpleasant. Winter nights can drop below freezing. Spring (March–April) offers the most reliable combination of warmth and dry rock. The canyon receives welcome afternoon shade in deep winter.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly to Marrakech or Ouarzazate, then a 3–4 hour drive through the Dadès Valley. Most climbers base in the village of Tinerhir or camp at the canyon mouth. A 4WD is not required for the main gorge but opens access to outlying sectors. Mobile signal is limited — download topos offline.
