Rock Climbing in Jebel Jais

United Arab Emirates · Western Asia

The UAE's highest mountain, rising to about 1,934 metres in the Hajar range above Ras Al Khaimah. Cooler than the coast and cut with via ferrata routes, fixed cliffs and the world's longest zipline.

Why here

Jebel Jais gives the UAE something it otherwise lacks: real vertical rock at altitude, cool enough to climb in the winter months. The headline route is the Jais Via Ferrata, a cabled circuit that runs along the sheer limestone cliffs of the Hajar mountains with a rope bridge strung across a ravine, letting people with no climbing background move through genuine exposure on a fixed line. Toroverde UAE operates the via ferrata alongside the mountain's zipline, and Bear Grylls Explorers Camp runs its own guided via ferrata, abseiling and instructor-led rock climbing from its camp on the cliffs. The rock is sharp Hajar limestone and the views drop away into deep canyons on every side.

The season runs October to April; even at nearly 2,000 metres the summer is punishing, and the mountain's adventure operations largely close in the hottest months. Via ferrata routes are guided, harnessed and suitable for fit beginners with a head for heights. Winter mornings on the summit can be cold and occasionally wet, so bring a layer.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Jebel Jais is about a 45-minute drive up a well-graded mountain road from Ras Al Khaimah city, and around 90 minutes to two hours from Dubai. Activities run to timed sessions and book out on winter weekends, so reserve ahead. There is no public transport up the mountain; you need a car or a tour transfer.

Toroverde built and operates the Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline, a 2.83-kilometre wire strung across Jebel Jais on which riders fly face-first in a superman harness at up to 150 kilometres an hour. The company also runs the multi-line Jais Sky Tour on the mountain. Flights run in the cooler months and are booked through the official Jebel Jais visitor site.
