Rock Climbing in HampiIN

A UNESCO World Heritage ruined city in Karnataka scattered across an otherworldly landscape of granite boulders. The same rocks that frame 500-year-old temples form one of the largest and best bouldering areas in the world.

Why here

Hampi gets named alongside Fontainebleau, Rocklands, and Bishop as one of the world's great bouldering areas, and it is the only one where the approach to a problem winds through the ruins of a medieval empire. The granite boulders are effectively endless, thousands of problems across every grade, most barefoot-walkable from the villages, and the scene that has grown up on the Virupapur side supplies everything a visiting boulderer needs: crashpad rental, chalk, local guides who know which blocs hold the classics. It is also one of the cheapest world-class climbing trips on earth, with guesthouse-and-thali living costs that let a climber stay for a month on a week's budget elsewhere.

The season is dictated by heat: late October through February is prime, with dry air and cool mornings and evenings that give granite-friendly friction. By March the daytime heat compresses climbing into dawn and dusk sessions, and the April-September stretch is too hot and then too wet (monsoon roughly June-September) for serious climbing.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Hubli (HBX) or Bellary and drive two to three hours, or take an overnight train or bus from Bangalore or Goa to Hospet, thirty minutes from Hampi. The climbing scene centers on the Virupapur Gadde side of the river, where guesthouses, cafes, and climbing shops cluster. Crashpads and guiding are arranged on arrival, no advance booking needed; just avoid landing in the off-season when shops close.
