El Chorro's dramatic gorge cuts through the limestone heart of Málaga province, with 1,500+ bolted routes and proximity to Málaga airport making it the most accessible major crag in Spain. The Caminito del Rey trail now draws thousands of hikers through the same gorge — but the rock is extensive enough that climbers find their own space. Sectors like La Cascada, Makinodromo, and Frontales offer world-class movement at every grade.
Best months
The Málaga microclimate makes El Chorro a near year-round destination with a winter peak. October through April is prime — mild days, dry rock, uncrowded sectors. July and August are hot, but south-facing walls catch sea breezes and early morning sessions are productive. Rain is occasional and the limestone dries fast.
Getting there & around
Fly into Málaga (under 2 hours from most of Europe). El Chorro village is 60km northwest — 50 minutes by car or 90 minutes by direct train from Málaga. Most climbing accommodation is at El Chorro village or the nearby Finca La Campana. No technical approach required; most routes start roadside or within a 10-minute walk.
