Rock Climbing in Cat BaVN

The largest island in the Ha Long Bay archipelago, surrounded by the limestone karst towers of UNESCO-listed Lan Ha Bay. Its cliffs rising straight from warm sea water have made it Southeast Asia's premier deep water soloing destination.

Why here

Deep water soloing, climbing ropeless above water deep enough to fall into, exists in only a handful of places worldwide, and Cat Ba is Southeast Asia's best. More than 230 lines rise off 24 cliffs scattered through Lan Ha Bay's karst towers, reached by boat from Cat Ba Town, with grades from beginner-friendly juggy traverses to hard overhanging test pieces. The format strips climbing to its most fun essentials: no ropes, no gear, a boat below, and a splash when you fall. Add 120-plus bolted sport routes on the island's land crags and you have a full climbing destination where the rest day is kayaking the same bay you climbed over the day before.

The sweet spots are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November): warm enough for repeated water falls, dry enough for good friction, with 15-plus climbable days a month. June through August works but is hot, humid, and thunderstorm-prone; December through March turns cool and damp, when deep water soloing loses its appeal and only the sport crags make sense.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

From Hanoi, take a bus-ferry combination or drive to Hai Phong and cross to the island, about four hours door to door; there is no airport on Cat Ba. Deep water solo trips run as guided boat day trips from Cat Ba Town with all equipment provided, bookable a day or two ahead outside holiday weekends. Bring nothing but a swimsuit and climbing shoes if you have them; operators cover the rest.
