The Vatican Museums are among the greatest museum complexes on earth, packed into the tiny sovereign territory of Vatican City. The collection grew from the art the popes gathered from the sixteenth century onward and now runs through more than fifty connected galleries, so a visit is a single long walk past classical sculpture like the Laocoon and the Apollo Belvedere, the frescoed Raphael Rooms, the tapestry and map galleries, and Egyptian and Etruscan collections, before ending in the Sistine Chapel beneath Michelangelo's ceiling and Last Judgment. It is the reason most travellers cross into the Vatican at all, and the scale means a first visit is about choosing a route rather than seeing everything. You can go independently with a timed ticket or with an accredited guide who can pace the galleries and read the Sistine Chapel, where silence is enforced and photography banned. For art on this level in one building, nothing else compares.
Best months
The museums open Monday to Saturday, with the last Sunday of each month free and very busy, and close on most Sundays and church holidays, so check the official calendar. Crowds are heavy year round and worst in summer and around Easter; the earliest morning slots and the late-opening evenings in the warmer months are calmer. The route is long and mostly indoors, and the Sistine Chapel is a strict silence-and-no-photography zone at the end of a one-way walk.
Getting there & around
The entrance is on Viale Vaticano on the north side of Vatican City, a short walk from the Ottaviano metro stop in Rome, and is separate from the entrance to Saint Peter's Basilica. Buy timed tickets only through the official portal, tickets.museivaticani.va, to skip the long standby line and to avoid the many lookalike reseller sites. Booking an accredited guided tour also secures entry. Dress is enforced: shoulders and knees covered for the Sistine Chapel.
