A weathered fishing and university town on Ghana's Central Region coast, Cape Coast is defined by its whitewashed slave-trade castle above the surf and by neighbouring Elmina, together the emotional heart of the diaspora's return to Ghana and a UNESCO World Heritage anchor of the old Gold Coast.
Why here
Cape Coast Castle and its neighbour at Elmina are the most powerful surviving monuments of the transatlantic slave trade. Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482, the oldest European building south of the Sahara, and Cape Coast Castle grew from a Swedish timber fort of 1653 into Britain's Gold Coast headquarters. Hundreds of thousands of captives were held in their dungeons before being forced through the Door of No Return onto ships bound for the Americas. Both are run today by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and Cape Coast Castle houses the West African Historical Museum, whose collection sets shackles and muskets against Akan goldweights and ceremonial drums. UNESCO inscribed the castles in 1979, and since the 2019 Year of Return they have become a place of pilgrimage for the African diaspora. A guided tour through the cells, the governor's quarters and the seaward gate is Ghana's essential history lesson.
Best months
The castles are open year-round with guided tours run by museum staff throughout the day. The coastal dry seasons, roughly November to March and again in July and August, are the most comfortable for walking the ramparts. Cape Coast and Elmina are about twenty minutes apart, and most visitors see both in a day, often pairing them with the Assin Manso ancestral slave river inland. Tours can be emotionally heavy, so allow time to sit with it.
Getting there & around
Cape Coast is about three hours west of Accra by road, a straightforward drive or shared trip along the coastal highway. The two castles sit right on the shore in Cape Coast and Elmina towns, twenty minutes apart, and entry with a guide is arranged on arrival at each gate. Kakum National Park and its canopy walk are half an hour inland, so many visitors base in Cape Coast for a couple of nights.

Since 1957 it has been run by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and it houses the West African Historical Museum, whose collection ranges from shackles to Akan goldweights and drums. Guided tours run through the dungeons and end at the Door of No Return, the gate through which captives were forced onto ships. UNESCO inscribed the castle in 1979.
