Museums & Galleries in Bruges
The best-preserved medieval city in Flanders, a UNESCO World Heritage site of canals, brick gables and market squares in the northwest of Belgium. Once one of Europe's great trading and banking centres, it is now a walkable old town famous for Flemish Primitive painting, chocolate and working breweries.
Why here
Bruges was the home of the Flemish Primitives, the painters who transformed European art with oil paint and microscopic detail in the fifteenth century, and two museums a short walk apart show their work where it was made. The Groeningemuseum holds the city's fine-art collection, including Jan van Eyck's luminous Madonna with Canon van der Paele of 1436 and panels by Hans Memling and Gerard David, then carries the story on through Flemish expressionism to Magritte. A few minutes away, the Old St John's Hospital keeps six paintings Memling made for the hospital itself in the 1480s, among them the tiny, jewel-like Shrine of St Ursula, displayed in the medieval wards where the sick were once cared for. Seeing these works in Bruges, rather than scattered across the world's big galleries, lets you connect the paintings to the streets, guild halls and light of the city that produced them, which is the whole point of coming here.
Best months
Both museums are indoor and open year-round, closed on Mondays, making this a strong option in any weather. They keep summer hours of 10am to 6pm from April to early November and shorter winter hours the rest of the year. A single Musea Brugge combination ticket or the 72-hour Musea Brugge Card covers both and several other city museums. Weekday mornings are quietest; the Groeningemuseum's small rooms get busy with tour groups in the afternoon.
Getting there & around
Both museums sit in the historic core and need no car. The Groeningemuseum is on the Dijver, a short walk south of the Markt, and the Old St John's Hospital is on the Mariastraat opposite the Church of Our Lady, a few minutes further on. A Musea Brugge combination ticket or 72-hour card is the cheapest way to see both plus other city museums. Buy online or at the box office and go early to beat the afternoon tour groups.

Groeningemuseum
OrganizerThe Groeningemuseum on the Dijver in Bruges, run by Musea Brugge, holds six centuries of Flemish and Belgian painting in a compact set of rooms. Its heart is the Flemish Primitives: Jan van Eyck's Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele, painted in 1436, and works by Hans Memling, Gerard David and Hugo van der Goes. The collection runs on through Flemish expressionism to modern names such as Rene Magritte, making it the single best place to trace the art of Bruges and Flanders in one visit.
Sint-Janshospitaal
OrganizerSint-Janshospitaal, the Old St John's Hospital on the Mariastraat, is one of the oldest surviving hospital buildings in Europe, with parts dating to the twelfth century, and is now a museum run by Musea Brugge. It houses six works that Hans Memling painted for the hospital in the late fifteenth century, including the Shrine of St Ursula and the St John Altarpiece, shown where they were made. The complex also keeps a preserved seventeenth-century apothecary and a herb garden.
