St Petersburg is where you go to stand inside the collection of the Russian tsars. The State Hermitage occupies the Winter Palace and four adjoining buildings on the Neva, and its holdings run to some three million items, from Scythian gold to a room of Rembrandts and two Leonardo Madonnas. You can spend a full day and see a fraction of it. The building itself is the point as much as the paintings: the Jordan Staircase, the malachite hall, the throne rooms of an empire, all restored after the siege. The city around it is a museum in the open air, laid out on the Neva delta as a European capital in the early eighteenth century, and the short white-night summer keeps the galleries and embankments light past midnight. Serious visitors pair the Hermitage with the Russian Museum for Russian art and a canal walk past the Church of the Spilled Blood. It is unhurried, indoor culture at the highest level, which also makes it one of the few things worth the trouble in a country under a Do Not Travel advisory.

The Hermitage is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed Mondays, with late evenings on Wednesday and Friday. It is busiest in the June to August white-nights season and over Russian public holidays; a winter weekday is far quieter and the low light suits the palace interiors. Buy timed tickets on the official site before arrival, as the foreign-visitor queue at the door is long. The city is walkable but winter is dark and cold, with real ice underfoot from December to March.

US State Department Level 4 Do Not Travel per travel.state.gov (as of 2026-07), reissued 29 December 2025, citing Russia's war against Ukraine, the significant risk of wrongful detention of US nationals, terrorism, and drone incidents in major cities including St Petersburg. US consular services in Russia are suspended. St Petersburg's Pulkovo airport has no direct flights from most of Europe or North America since 2022, so arrival is usually via a third country. Foreign bank cards do not work in Russia; bring cash to exchange. The Hermitage is on Palace Square in the centre, reachable on the metro to Admiralteyskaya. Buy tickets on hermitagemuseum.org, which sells to foreign visitors.
