Why here
Most visitors treat Libreville only as the airport before the parks, but the capital holds the best single introduction to Gabon's cultures, the Musee National des Arts, Rites et Traditions du Gabon. Reopened in a purpose-built downtown museum in 2019, it gathers around 2,500 ethnographic objects into themed collections of masks, reliquary figures, musical instruments, Mbigou soapstone carvings, basketry and ritual objects, the material world of peoples like the Fang, Punu and Kota whose masks shaped modern European art a century ago. Seeing the reliquary guardians and white Punu masks here, with their context explained, makes far more sense of the forest cultures than encountering them cold. The museum also runs a small botanical garden and hosts a books-and-arts festival, and it sits within walking distance of the city's seafront and markets. For a traveler heading into the parks, a morning here is the cultural counterweight to all the wildlife.

The museum is indoor and open year-round, so it works in any season, and it pairs naturally with the long June-to-September dry season when most people transit Libreville for the parks. Galleries are air-conditioned, a relief in the humid coastal climate. Displays are labelled mainly in French, and a guide adds depth on the ritual meaning of the masks and reliquaries.
Getting there & around
The national museum is in central Libreville, close to the seafront boulevard and an easy taxi ride from anywhere in the city. It makes a good half-day either side of a domestic flight to the parks. Entry is inexpensive and paid at the door. An e-visa is required for most visitors to Gabon; check your government advisory before travel and carry cash, as card payment is limited.
