A sheltered natural harbour on Antigua's south coast and the heart of Caribbean yachting. Its Georgian naval base, Nelson's Dockyard, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still a working marina, and the neighbouring Falmouth Harbour fills each spring with the fleet for Antigua Sailing Week.
Why here
Nelson's Dockyard is the only working Georgian-era naval dockyard left in the world, and it is the reason English Harbour carries the weight it does. Britain's Royal Navy built the base in the 18th century to guard its Caribbean sugar colonies, and a young Horatio Nelson was stationed here in the 1780s. The stone capstan house, sail lofts, officers' quarters and pillars that once carried a boat-house roof have been restored rather than rebuilt, and in 2016 UNESCO inscribed the Antigua Naval Dockyard and its related archaeological sites as a World Heritage Site. The Dockyard Museum, in the former Naval Officer's House, lays out the story across two floors, from the brutal economics of the sugar-and-slavery era that the fleet protected to the daily life of sailors in a malarial tropical station. Walk up to Shirley Heights above the harbour and the whole defensive landscape falls into place, gun batteries, cisterns and lookouts strung along the ridges. It is history you move through rather than read about, still full of masts and rigging.
Best months
The Dockyard and its museum are open year round, with the dry, cooler months of December to April the most comfortable for walking the site and the surrounding trails to Shirley Heights and Fort Berkeley. A single national-park admission covers the Dockyard grounds, the museum and the walking paths.
Getting there & around
Nelson's Dockyard sits within the village of English Harbour, about 45 minutes by road from V. C. Bird International Airport and St. John's. Entry is through the national-park gate, and the museum, restored buildings, restaurants and marina are all within an easy walk. The climb or short drive to Shirley Heights for the sunset view pairs naturally with a Dockyard visit.

Its Dockyard Museum, in the former Naval Officer's House at English Harbour, tells the story of the Georgian Royal Navy base where Horatio Nelson served in the 1780s, set among restored stone warehouses, sail lofts and the fortified hills of Shirley Heights and Fort Berkeley above the harbour.
