Brazzaville is where modern Central African art found its feet, and the Ecole de Peinture de Poto-Poto is the reason. Founded in 1951 in the Poto-Poto quarter, the school gave self-taught Congolese painters a place to work in their own idiom, and within a few years its bright, elongated figures were hanging at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Brussels World's Fair. It has trained several thousand artists over seven decades, earned a UNESCO Picasso Medal in 2002, and still operates from its low, sloping-roofed building on the Moungali roundabout, where you can watch sixth-generation painters at work, talk to the resident masters, and buy canvases directly from the artists. For a visitor, it is both a living gallery and a piece of art history you can walk into, an antidote to the idea that Brazzaville is only a transit point for the northern parks. The city around it is the birthplace of Congolese rumba, so the art visit sits inside a wider musical culture.

The school and gallery are open through the year, an indoor visit that suits any season, and pair well with the drier, cooler months from June to September. It is a working studio as much as a gallery, so the best experience is on a weekday when artists are painting. Prices for works are negotiated directly with the painters, and a guide or a little French helps.
Getting there & around
The Poto-Poto school is in the Moungali district of central Brazzaville, a short taxi ride from the city centre and the riverfront. The city has an international airport and is the arrival point for trips to the northern rainforest parks, so the school fits easily into a day in the capital. Carry cash in local francs for any purchases. Check your government advisory for the Republic of the Congo before travel; the Pool region south of the city has seen past unrest, but central Brazzaville is the normal base.

Its work reached New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1955 and the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, and the school received a UNESCO Picasso Medal in 2002. It still works from its original building on the Moungali roundabout, where resident masters paint, teach a sixth generation, and sell canvases directly to visitors.
