Mountaineering / Summits in MendozaAR
Argentina's wine capital at 750m in the Andean foothills. Base city for Aconcagua expeditions and one of South America's best cities for food and wine.
Why here
Aconcagua is the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere at 6,961m. The Normal Route involves no technical climbing: no ropes, no crampons on the standard ascent, no glacier travel. What it requires is 18-21 days for proper acclimatization and the physical and mental discipline to manage a serious high-altitude expedition. Base camp at Plaza de Mulas (4,370m) is well-established with medical support, a rescue service, and multiple camps on the route. Mendoza is one of South America's best cities, with world-class wine, food, and a relaxed Andean energy that makes the approach days and recovery week genuinely good.
Best months
The climbing season is December to February only. January is the busiest month on the mountain. Weather on Aconcagua is notoriously violent and unpredictable; summit-day decisions require guide assessment and should never be rushed. Wind is the main hazard on the upper mountain. Many climbers acclimatize with a day hike to Cerro Bonete (5,002m) or a lower objective before beginning the summit push. The permit system is competitive in peak season.
Getting there & around
Fly into Mendoza (MDZ) or Santiago, Chile (SCL), then 5 hours by bus via the Paso Los Libertadores. Permits are required and limited; they sell out months in advance for peak season dates. The permit system is managed by the Mendoza provincial government and must be arranged before arrival. Most climbers use the Penitentes ski resort village as a final staging point before the Horcones trailhead. A licensed guide or outfitter is required for the permit process and strongly recommended for the ascent.
