A dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz range about 60km north-east of Tehran, and at 5,610m the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in Asia. A near-perfect cone crowned with sulphur vents and seasonal snow, it is a non-technical but serious high-altitude climb, most often ascended by the southern route from the village of Polour through the mountaineering federation camps.

Mount Damavand is the roof of Iran, a 5,610m volcano that stands alone above the Alborz and can be seen from Tehran on a clear day. It is the highest peak in the Middle East west of the Caucasus and the highest volcano in Asia, and it holds a central place in Persian myth as the mountain where the tyrant Zahhak was chained. As a climb it is non-technical, a long walk on scree and snow rather than a rock or ice route, which puts it within reach of fit hikers, but the altitude is real and the summit ridge smells of the sulphur venting from the crater. The usual line is the southern route from Polour, with 4x4 access to the Goosfandsara meadow, a night at the Bargah Sevom camp around 4,200m to acclimatize, and a pre-dawn push to the top. Standing on the summit at first light, with the Caspian lowlands under cloud to the north and the desert plateau to the south, is one of the great high-altitude days in this part of the world, and it pairs naturally with the cultural route through Tehran and the classic Persian cities.
Best months
The climbing season is short, roughly June to September, when the snow on the southern route has consolidated or cleared and the federation camps are staffed; outside that window it becomes a winter mountaineering objective. Even in summer the summit is cold and windy, and altitude sickness is the main risk, so a day or two of acclimatization and a night high on the mountain are standard. The sulphur fumes near the crater can be strong in still conditions. Good boots, warm layers, sun protection and a slow pace matter more than technical skill.

Iran is rated US State Department Level 4: Do Not Travel, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Iran (as of 2026-07), citing arbitrary arrest and detention risk, especially for dual nationals, and regional conflict. There are no US consular services in Iran. Damavand itself is a well-run mountaineering destination with federation-staffed camps, but the country-level advisory applies and you should check your own government's current advice before booking. Most nationalities need a tourist visa arranged through a licensed Iranian agency, which issues an authorization code before you fly into Tehran; US, UK and Canadian citizens must be on a guided tour. The peak is a 2-3 hour drive from Tehran via Polour. Sanctions mean international cards do not work, so carry all your cash. Guides handle the mountain permit and hut bookings.
