Mountaineering / Summits in Aoraki Mount CookNZ
New Zealand's highest peak and the training ground of Hillary, climbed from a village that lives entirely inside the national park.
Why here
Aoraki is New Zealand's highest peak at 3,724 meters and the mountain Edmund Hillary trained on before Everest, a serious glaciated ascent whose grade belies its modest altitude: heavily crevassed approaches, objective hazard, and Southern Alps weather that manufactures its own storms. The guiding tradition matches the mountain. Alpine Guides, the country's oldest guiding company, has been based inside the park since 1966, and Alpine Recreation runs guided ascents and instruction from Lake Tekapo; both carry IFMGA and NZMGA credentials, and both will tell you honestly whether you belong on the summit route or on a skills course first. The village sits entirely within the national park, which makes the approach logistics the easiest part.
Best months
November to February is the summit season, with early season offering the best snow bridges over the crevasse fields. Guided ascents want prior alpine experience; skills courses and lesser summits like Mount Aylmer are the honest entry points. Weather days are built into every itinerary for a reason.
Getting there & around
Drive four hours from Christchurch to Mount Cook Village. Summit attempts run three to five days with ski-plane or helicopter access to Plateau Hut. Book guides many months ahead for the season.
