Motorcycle Adventure Touring in Transfagarasan
The road Top Gear called the best in the world, ridden with the higher Transalpina in one Carpathian loop.
Why here
The Transfagarasan climbs its hairpin stacks to 2,042 meters at Balea Lake, and Top Gear's verdict, the best driving road in the world, made it a pilgrimage; riders get the better version of it. The classic itinerary pairs it with the Transalpina, Romania's highest paved road at 2,145 meters, in one Carpathian loop with village Transylvania in between, ridden over five to seven days on rented BMW GSs with guided or self-guided support. Both passes open only from around July to October, which compresses the season and clears the choice: summer weekdays, early starts, and the mountain to yourselves before the buses climb.
Best months
Both passes open roughly July 1 to October 31, weather permitting; summer weekends jam the Transfagarasan, so ride weekdays and early. Confident full-license riding is required; hairpins, fog, and free-range sheep are all part of the syllabus.
Getting there & around
Tours stage from Bucharest, Brasov, or Sibiu with rental fleets and support options. Self-guided packages include routing and lodging; guided adds a lead rider.
