Motorcycle Adventure Touring in MedellinCO
Colombia's second city, rebuilt around innovation and culture after decades of upheaval. Sits at 1,500m in a narrow Andean valley with a year-round spring climate.
Why here
Colombia's Andes offer some of the most spectacular riding in South America, and Medellin is the organizing point. The Circuito de Antioquia to the west covers coffee farms, canyon roads, and Andean switchbacks within a day's loop. Heading south, the Eje Cafetero (coffee axis) through Manizales, Armenia, and Salento gives access to the wax palm forests of the Valle de Cocora. Longer circuits push toward Cartagena on the coast or south toward Bogota. The city itself has a functioning rental market and a resident expat riding community that shares current route intelligence.
Best months
Colombia has two dry seasons given its equatorial position: December through March, and June through August. Year-round riding is possible, but the wet seasons (April-May and September-November) bring heavy rain in the Andes and some road closures. Higher altitude roads (above 2,500m) can be cool even in dry season; carry layers. The Pacific coast routes are wetter than the Andean circuits. Research specific route conditions before departure.
Getting there & around
Fly into Jose Maria Cordova (MDE) or El Dorado (BOG) and ride north. Motorcycle rentals based in El Poblado and Laureles neighborhoods in Medellin; quality varies so inspect bikes carefully before committing. An International Driving Permit is required. Safety conditions have improved significantly over the past decade, but route research matters; some secondary roads have historically been problematic. A local guide is strongly recommended for first-time visitors venturing off main circuits. The expat motorcycle community in Medellin is active online and an excellent source of current advice.
