Why here

Georgia packs an extraordinary amount of riding terrain into a small country. The Military Highway north from Tbilisi climbs to the Cross Pass at 2,379m before dropping into Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits on a ridge above 2,000m with the Caucasus range behind it. From Tbilisi you can also ride west to Kutaisi and the Black Sea coast, south through the cave city at Vardzia, and east into the Kakheti wine country. Few countries in the world give you this variety within a day's ride of the capital. Rental infrastructure has grown substantially in recent years and guided tour companies cover most circuits.

Best months

April through October for most routes. The Cross Pass to Kazbegi typically opens in May once snow clears and closes in November. Summer (July-August) sees the most consistent weather but also the most tourist traffic on the Military Highway. Spring and autumn give the best light and fewer crowds. The Vardzia route in the south is rideable from March. Rain is possible any season; pack for it.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Tbilisi International (TBS). Several rental companies in the city offer adventure-spec bikes; book ahead in summer. Most Western nationals do not need a visa for Georgia (up to 1 year). Roads are generally good on the main tourist routes; the Military Highway surface varies from smooth to potholed. Fuel is available throughout, including in smaller towns. Border crossings to Armenia (Sadakhlo/Bagratashen) and Turkey (Sarpi) are well-established for motorcyclists with the appropriate documentation.
