Film Festivals in January

Kustendorf is the only film festival on earth held in a village a Palme d'Or winner built for his own film: Drvengrad, the wooden town Emir Kusturica raised on Mecavnik hill while shooting Life Is a Miracle, with its Stanley Kubrick cinema, galleries, and streets named for Fellini and Bergman. The festival, organized by Kusturica's Rasta International under the Ministry of Culture's patronage, runs each late January with no red carpet and no commercial sponsors: film students screen alongside masters, and past guests run from Johnny Depp to Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The rest of the year the village hosts you anyway, and the Sargan Eight heritage railway loops its figure-eight through the hills below from April to October.

The Goteborg Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Nordic countries and the reason to be in Gothenburg in late January, when the whole city turns to cinema. Founded in 1979, it draws around 270,000 visits and screens some 250 films from 80 countries over ten days, filling cinemas across the center with premieres, retrospectives and Nordic debuts, and serving as the key meeting place for the region's film industry. Its top honor is the Dragon Award for best Nordic film, and its programming has a reputation for the bold and the experimental, from all-night marathons to one-off stunts like a single viewer marooned on a lighthouse island to watch films in isolation. Unlike the red-carpet glamour of the bigger festivals, Goteborg is a public festival, built for audiences as much as the industry, in a walkable, welcoming winter city of canals, cafes and seafood. Its 50th edition, a landmark anniversary, runs from 29 January to 7 February 2027. For a film traveler who wants the pulse of Nordic cinema at its source, this is the event.

Sundance is the world's premier independent film festival, and its mountain resort setting in Park City, Utah creates a completely different atmosphere from any European counterpart. Films play in ski lodges, converted theaters, and purpose-built venues scattered across a small ski town at 7,000 feet. The combination of January snow, indie film energy, and the concentrated nature of Park City means filmmaker encounters are genuinely common. All programming is publicly ticketed, no industry badge required.
