Canyoning in OtztalAT
Tyrol's longest side valley, where glacier-fed gorges at the valley mouth have made this corner of Austria the canyoning and whitewater capital of the Alps since the 1980s.
Why here
The lower Ötztal packs more commercially run canyons into a short drive than anywhere else in Austria. The Auerklamm is the classic first canyon, a friendly mix of slides and small jumps, while harder gorges nearby step up to serious abseils and committing swims, so you can progress across a week without changing base. The valley entrance is built for it: AREA 47, Austria's largest outdoor adventure park, sits right at Ötztal-Bahnhof alongside a cluster of independent outfitters, which keeps standards high and prices honest. Water comes straight off the glaciers above Sölden, so every descent has that cold, fast, alive quality that tamer canyons lack.
Best months
Season runs June to September. Early summer brings the biggest glacier melt, which pushes some canyons into advanced-only territory until flows settle in late July. Water stays cold all season, roughly 6 to 10°C, and full wetsuits are standard issue on every trip. August is the most reliable month for beginners. September is quieter with lower, clearer water.
Getting there & around
Fly into Innsbruck, 45 minutes away by car or direct train to Ötztal-Bahnhof, or into Munich at about two and a half hours. Providers cluster at the valley entrance around Ötztal-Bahnhof, Haiming and Sautens, and most tours are half-day bookings with all gear provided. July and August weekends fill up, so book a few days ahead in peak season. A car helps for exploring the upper valley but is not needed for the canyoning itself.

AREA 47
OutfitterAustria's largest outdoor adventure park, planted at the mouth of the Ötztal on the 47th parallel. Canyoning runs daily in season, from beginner trips in the Auerklamm to advanced descents with big abseils, all gear included. The base itself is half the experience: a water park, climbing walls, on-site lodging and a rowdy summer crowd, so it suits travelers who want their adrenaline with a social scene attached.
