Canyoning in Nevidio Canyon

Montenegro · Southern Europe

The last canyon in Europe to be fully traversed: a Komarnica slot so narrow the walls nearly touch, swum and jumped rather than abseiled.

Why here

Nevidio, the unseen one, was the last canyon in Europe to be fully traversed, unconquered until 1965, and the Komarnica still guards it: a slot on Durmitor's southern edge so narrow the walls nearly touch, descended by swimming, jumps, and natural slides with no abseiling on the standard route, which makes it that rare thing, a serious canyon open to fit first-timers. The specialist operators run it in small groups with wetsuits and park fees handled, four hours in the dark green water between walls the sun barely reaches. It is the Balkans' best canyoning day, and it feels like a secret because for four centuries it effectively was one.

June to September, snowmelt-dependent at the season's edges. Confident swimming and moderate fitness are the entry bar; the jumps have bypasses. Groups are small and book a day or more ahead for wetsuit sizing.
