Canyoning in MinakamiJP
Japan's outdoor-adventure capital in the Gunma mountains, 70 minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen: snowmelt Class IV on the Tone River, canyons, and onsen recovery.
Why here
Minakami is Japan's canyoning epicenter: steep granite gorges fed by the Tanigawa snow catchment concentrate slides, jumps, and abseils into one compact valley, and Canyons, the operator that effectively founded Japanese commercial canyoning in the late 1990s, still runs it to international standards from beginner-friendly Fox Canyon through committing full-day descents. The honest framing: as a standalone it sits a notch below the Alps' best, but as half of the Minakami double, spring whitewater, summer canyons, onsen every evening, 70 minutes from Tokyo, it completes an adventure hub with no equivalent near any other world capital.
Best months
June through September, once the snowmelt subsides and the canyons open; July and August are the warm peak, dovetailing with the river's mellow season so both activities book into one trip. Half-day formats are standard.
Getting there & around
Same access as the river: shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen and an operator shuttle. Book summer weekends a couple of weeks ahead.
